We just pack up the van sometimes and go whatever direction we’re pointed in. There will always be some dreamy landscape to discover; and often some out-of-the-way cafรฉ as well. But never fear, this trusty steed has a small kitchen and it’s easy to turn out great meals in case we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere, which is more often the case.

A couple days ago we packed up the big white van and headed out to this truly magical place in New Mexico. It’s called the Pecos National Historical Park. I can hardly wait to go back. It’s not that long of a drive from our house.

The night before last, we heard sirens and those neighbors nearby could see the flames and smell the smoke. The fire department out here is good and it needs to be. When it gets dry here, it really gets dry and it only takes the slightest spark to get the whole thing going. Someone threw a firecracker from the window of their car. They just lit it and threw it out of the car…no thought for the consequences. The next day cyclists stopped to see the damage that nearly consumed one nearby house.

A week or so ago I took the Solis down to Albuquerque for some service. The dealership had this old car parked out front and I was immediately attracted to it. It is light years away from the Solis Pocket that I had taken in for service. But there was “something” about it that drew me in.

Traveling around Europe, I saw carved architectural adornments known as “the green man”. He shows up everywhere as a part human, part plant creature. Some of these are very old, certainly as far back as early medieval. In Appalachia you can still find carvers who create the same images and have no idea about the “green man” connection. I think those images in Europe stuck with me on some important level.

Sometimes I just have to try things like this. We’ll see where this goes.
Quite a while ago I was reading some Nostradamus. Who knows if this is real or made-up. I don’t know and I’ve never dug into it. One of his stories, written sometime in the mid 1500’s, describes a man standing at the southern shore of England holding a flat stone in his hand. And by speaking into this stone he was able to communicate with a man on the other side of the Channel. Why that story should pop into mind defies me. But, what the heck, I liked the image on its own.

One thing is for sure about this image, and probably all of the other images within this website…I have no conscious idea just what is going on or why I was attracted to this particular combination. Well, I thought, maybe I just liked the red and green combination. But I suspect it’s something more.
Out hiking one day, I came across this rock face. I’d been walking alone when I sensed something, or someone looking at me. So I turned around and there he was. The “hair” and “eyebrows” are part of the multiple exposure that just seemed to work with “him”. Most of these are done in-camera.

This is the first posting in my second photographic website. It’s a whole new adventure for me because my other website “santafeandme.photos” is what would be called traditional photography. And most of the images on that website are black and white. These Forgotten Dreams images on the other hand, are more open-ended. They go where they go. It’s a little more open process than santafeandme.photos.
The name of “Forgotten Dreams” emerged as the title and how I came to that is a mystery to me. But it seems to work with the kind of imagery I’m interesting in creating: composites and multiple exposures.
This is the first image. If that looks like an RV to you you’d be correct. That represents a dream that was forgotten, but not completely so, for a long time. Now it’s here and being able to take off to parts unknown with it (and the dogs) is a major dreamlike event for me. It’s a solar-powered photographic studio on wheels and an expeditor of photographic pursuits among many others.
For the techy-types out there. The van in question is a Winnebago Solis Pocket. It’s the smallest and least complex van conversion that you can find, unless you build it yourself. I purchased it used from a dealership in Ft. Meyers, Florida…very far from Santa Fe where I live. It is a photo studio, gourmet restaurant and home-away-from-home. I have a hunch that it will figure in several images as I embark on this photographic journey.
